Detective John McClane comes to Los Angeles from New York to see his wife, Holly, whom he has been separated from for half a year. He is invited to a Christmas party held on the 30th floor of a skyscraper. However, a group of thugs has their sights set on over six hundred million dollars in public bonds stored in the building's vault. They lock down the building and take the partygoers hostage. McClane narrowly escapes and begins to confront the thugs alone.
